step 1: where do we want to be
where are we now
how will we get there
action
are we making progress
we learn and share

How can we get there?

Once a community knows where it is going (dream) and where it is now (Self Assessment), people start to plan for action. They think about what they are going to do in order to move from where they are today towards where they want to be.

Why?

The purpose of the action plan is to guide our thoughts and actions to stay focused towards achieving our vision using available resources (people, money, materials) or outside support.

What happens?

After doing its Self Assessment, the community sets

- 3 priority practices
- target levels for these priorities
- actions they want to undertake to reach the target levels
- a time frame within which they will reach each target level
- indicators which will let them and others know that they have reached each target level

Genoka womenIn Genoka Settlement, Papua New Guinea, the mothers and the young women recognised that the absence of opportunities for employment meant that the young girls went out partying at night and so they put themselves at risk. In order to address this particular vulnerability, they recognised that they needed to provide some activities for the girls.

So here are the actions that they decided to carry out:
- Identify the young mothers and girls who are at risk
- Provide HIV/AIDS basic training for young mothers and girls
- Give training in income generation activities (e.g. cooking, sewing, marketing/trading)

They found that within their settlement, there were individuals who could provide training on income generating activities. Every participant contributed 5 kina to buy the material and refreshments.
