Gender

Imagine a community where men and women plan together for the future and support each other to become AIDS Competent. Imagine a couple, where husband and wife understand each other and care for each other.

This is possible only if people can break the silence and discuss the issue of HIV and how it affects them and their relationship. Back to results on HIV

A few examples...

Women in Walis Station

Everyone - girls, boys, mothers and fathers- can speak up

Settlements in 5 provinces in Papua New Guinea developed their dream, self-assessement and action plan. Facilitators usually would stimulate discussions in small groups with young women, young men, mothers and fathers. Everyone felt free to say what s/he thinks. At the end of every visit each group would share their ideas. This process helped couples, families and communities to discuss about HIV and understand each other better.

Wives protect their husbands

"We visited a community of truck-drivers' wives in Rwanda. A former truck driver, who is now blind, and who lives with HIV explained: “Please, understand us, understand your husbands: when we are on a 3 weeks trip, we stop in many small hotels, and nearly every time there are girls who want to seduce us. In spite of our oath of faithfulness, it can happen that we go with them. This is how I got AIDS myself”. One of the women answered: ”We understand that our husbands can be won over by human feelings and that they can put themselves in danger”. And the women decided immediately to put a box of condom in their husband’s suitcase every time he would leave." Valens Nkuriyinka, Constellation coach in Rwanda
