1. An introduction to SALT, our ways of thinking and working
The best way to learn about SALT is to experience it.
What can you expect?
Experience the essence of the Community Life Competence Process (CLCP) by joining SALT visits in communities, apply it yourself, reflect on the learning and get inspired.
You will learn about the specific ways of thinking and ways of working of the Constellation and apply this directly during the visits. The experience can vary from a 2-day exposure close to where you live or a 5-day immersion in different provinces in Northern Thailand, Kenya or another country.
Example In December 2006, a group of 25 government officials, UN representatives and others from Indonesia, Madagascar, Uganda, Côte d’Ivoire, Thailand, Ireland, Belgium and France joined a 5-day SALT visit in Northern Thailand. They learned about SALT, the process and the strong local responses to HIV in Thailand. |
2. Support the establishment of SALT facilitation teams
One way to stimulate local responses in a certain geographical setting is to set up a facilitation team and to build its capacity. This team can consist of community members, one or more NGOs, FBOs, government departments, UN agencies or other stakeholders. The support of the Constellation can vary depending on time and resources available.
The methodology for transfer is a combination of online learning and onsite support called ‘Blended Learning’.
Ideally, facilitators go through a 1 – 2 year process to become fully competent in all aspects of the approach. The process includes a number of learning events, joint practices in the field, support visits of experienced coaches and participatory measurement of progress. Alternatively, you can go through the online modules and request the - distant- support that is most appropriate for your situation.
What can you expect?
- A number of communities/ districts that respond locally to HIV or other life issues. This includes results on a variety of practices including ownership of the issue, increased service uptake, reduced stigma and mobilization of own resources.
- One or more competent facilitation teams that have the attitudes and technical skills to facilitate local responses to HIV, health or other issues.

3. Facilitate connections, learning and capturing of knowledge
Knowledge Management is an important aspect of development. How can organizations within a network better learn from each other? How can communities share their progress meaningfully with others? How can knowledge flow instead of being stored in one place? Creating the right environment for sharing is essential. The Community Life Competence Process (CLCP) uses specific Knowledge Management tools in combination with SALT to allow for improved learning and sharing between actors.
What can you expect?
- Increased and more relevant learning and sharing between organizations and people
- Increased technical capacity on values and methodologies for learning and sharing
- Synthesis and documentation of common knowledge, stories and good practices
Example 35 NGOs working on HIV in Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Philippines, Papua New Guinea and Thailand worked together over a 2-year period to apply the approach. Through face-to-face and interactions on the Internet, the NGOs learned from each other, captured their experiences, synthesized good practices and shared it with others. Read more. |
4. A combination of the above
In several processes we have combined the above options into one. For example, a 2-year process with the Great Lakes Initiative on AIDS (GLIA) established SALT facilitation teams consisting of transport workers and PLHIV. At the same time, the process facilitated connections between the 6 country teams.
