step 1: where do we want to be
where are we now
how will we get there
action
are we making progress
we learn and share

Where are we now?

Once a community knows where it wants to go (common vision), it reflects on where it is today.

Why?

The Community assesses where it is:
- To open the discussion about malaria
- To understand community situations by learning from each other from within the community
- To set a certain target to reach for improvement

What happens?

Based on their vision, the community comes up with practices that lead to that vision. Based on our experience, they can be summarized into 14 for malaria:

1. Facts of Life
2. Acknowledgement and Recognition of malaria as a disease
3. Including the most vulnerable in our response to malaria
4. Access to appropriate treatment timely
5. Severe malaria
6. Prevention: ITN
7. Prevention: IRS
8. Prevention: IPT
9. Gender driven response
10. Learning and transfer
11. Measuring change
12. Adapting our Response
13. Way of deploying our own strength
14. Mobilising resources

Communities assess themselves at a level between 1 and 5. One can understand the levels in general terms as follows:

self-assessment level

The facilitator stimulates the discussion and helps the community to come to a consensus.

The self-assessment is our guideTogo

In Gboto Assingamé (Togo) thirthy women from the club for Mothers held their copy of the self-assessment. "It is our guide!" exclaimed Mrs Katerita. "We refer to it when we meet every Thursday. It helps us to decide what we are going to do during the week to fight malaria." This is how they decided that each of them would contribute 40CFA Francs every forthnight. With this money, they buy ten bednets every month.
