Going to scale with the AIDS Competence Process in DR-Congo

RDCCompetence together with the Constellation work together with the National Multi-sectoral Programme against AIDS (PNMLS) to go to scale with the AIDS Competence Process in the entire country. More than 749 facilitators from NGOs and associations at provincial and local level have been trained and they are stimulating communities to take ownership of the issue. SALT teams worked in 1.698 communities in 11 provinces, in 15 main cities. More than 622 communities are now implementing their own action plan. In May 2010, facilitators of RDCCompétence from 15 cities and members of the provincial coordinations of PNMLS met in Kinshasa to prepare for implementation of the project "Support to community initiatives."

In May and June 2010, 10 day learning events took place in all provinces and participants were enthusiastic about the approach. More than 500 facilitators have been trained.

After a first SALT visit, the community of fishermen in Kisangani decided to do something about their own vulnerabilities, mainly women who engage in sex work in exchange for fish. On their own initiative, they organized an awareness raising session with an association of peer educators. They also addressed their vulnerabilities by providing condoms to their co-workers and friends. They linked up with a youth group that had a stock of condoms that could be distributed. Hundreds of communities in DRC, like the fishermen, are now starting to take action to respond to HIV.

In September and October 2010, facilitators of RDCCompetence are organizing support visits in each city to accompany the new facilitators in the field.

In December 2010, facilitators and communities in 3 provinces came together for a Knowledge Fair. They shared how they respond to HIV and the actions they took.
